OPC .NET (previously OPC Xi) is the newest OPC specification from the OPC Foundation. Based on Microsoft's WCF .NET framework, OPC .NET enables a smooth migration from Classic OPC and supports communication through firewalls. The new OPC .NET specification defines a .NET interface that eliminates the need for DCOM and .NET wrappers.
OPC .NET is based on WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) for fast local and secure communication through firewalls. With a rather simple data model, OPC .NET provides an integrated set of methods for accessing both run-time and historical data, events, and alarms. The interface is designed to allow a simple mapping to the classic OPC DA, HDA, AE interfaces.
OPC UA, in comparison is designed for multi-platform communication and is based on a complex data model.
