What is OPC

OPC is a published standard that defines the way in which data is transferred between data sources and software applications. A common analogy used to describe OPC technology is similar to that of a printer connected to a computer. The computer requires a printer driver in order to interface with the printer. Similarly, OPC is the driver installed on computers to help software applications interface with industrial data sources.

Data sources include Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), databases, historians, scales, temperature gauges, Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS), Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and a lot more. OPC technology is intended to interface with any source that can produce data.

Automation & IT Professionals as well as a wide variety of engineers use OPC to help manage their process. OPC technology is used in a wide variety of industries including process control such as power, oil & gas, petrochemical, pulp & paper, etc. It is also used in discrete manufacturing such as automotives. It also is used in military applications.

OPC technology is based on a server / client architecture. The OPC Foundation helps define the standard through different working groups made up of many member companies.

Who is the OPC Training Institute

OPCTI is the largest OPC training company in the world. OPCTI offers hands-on classes both in-person and online. Unlike other companies that offer vendor-biased information, OPCTI focuses strictly on training and does not sell its own products.

OPCTI’s comprehensive workshops provide automation professionals with a proven training program that enables them to quickly take on the challenging task of establishing a robust communication infrastructure. Each workshop is composed of various units that increase in complexity. In each unit, students first learn the theory followed by hands-on exercises that demonstrate common contemporary issues. Each unit has additional exercises to challenge even the most advanced students.

The Certified OPC Professional (COP) designation is endorsed by many OPC Foundation member companies. Holders of the COP designation have demonstrated proficiency with OPC technology, design architecture, installations.

OPCTI is an active member and a strong supporter of the OPC Foundation.
